What causes fibromyalgia?

While there is no known cause for fibromyalgia. recent medical studies undertaken by scientists has revealed some new startling facts about the pain disorder. One of the new discoveries is; sufferers with fibromyalgia process pain differently to other humans.

In humans there is a chemical within the cerebro-spinal fluid entitled substance ‘P’. Substance ‘P’ transmits pain signals to the brain. The key discovery in our case is substance ‘P’ is almost 3 times higher in sufferers with the disorder as in those who don’t have fibromyalgia.

There are various peer reviewed theories about why fibromyalgia develops in humans these include; An abnormal or sporadic sleep patterns being a factor in developing the disease. Research has shown sufferers of fibromyalgia usually have an altered pattern during either one or more of the stages of sleep including R.E.M. sleep.

Another theory is sufferers have subnormal amount of key nerve chemicals or neurotransmitters. The purpose of these transmitters is they send out messages to nerves and brain. This potentially explains why both the subnormal sleeping patterns and pain associated with fibromyalgia.

Another theory is that the symptoms may be a reaction to an unknown virus infection. Though it must be stated that several events may occur to cause such as persistent disorder like fibromyalgia.

Other noted theories include;

 Genetic Predisposition or susceptibility
 Stress related events
 Sleep disturbance
 Dopamine abnormality
 Serotonin levels
 Human growth hormone abnormality

Fibromyalgia Pain
Fibromyalgia is a disorder which affects humans and its literal
translation is ‘pain’ or ‘algia’  in the muscles ‘my’ and fibrous tissue or ‘fibro’. Fibromyalgia is classified as the presence of persistent or
chronic pain in the tissues and muscles. This non life threatening
illness is variable in degree from patient to patient with some sufferers experiencing severe to non-severe pain in the muscles.

Fibromyalgia effects the neck, shoulders, back, and hip areas of the body. Tenderness is noted to be worse in the mornings and has been described as flu-like, throbbing, burning, aching, and less commonly stabbing pain.

Statistics show 1 in 100 people develops fibromyalgia at some point during the course of their lives and the statistics show that people in middle age are most susceptible. The majority of those affected who were researched were female, although men and children can still develop the disorder.

Unfortunately there is no cure and no tangible specific treatment for fibromyalgia sufferers, but there are plenty of things that can make life easier for people like us. It’s important to note that it never damages the muscles and could in time improve.
